Why Your Dog Digs in the Yard

Your dog may dig in your yard to escape. He may hear playing children or dogs nearby or he may seek a mate. He may also dig to get to damp earth that he can lie down in to keep cool. Loose, soft dirt in garden beds may feel good to your dog’s feet. Your dog may also be bored. Fill in any holes especially those near the fence line for your dog’s safety. Give him lots of fun things to do in your yard. Toys and exercise apparatus will keep him busy. Remember to never leave your dog alone in the yard for long periods of time. Get out there and play with your dog so associates the yard with fun times without digging. Redirect your dog without fuss if you catch him digging. Never yell at your dog or punish him while he is learning. For more information, contact your East Indianapolis, IN veterinarian.
