Intestinal parasites like roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and certain types of protozoa can cause serious health problems in kittens. Testing a kitten for gastrointestinal parasites involves the examination of a stool sample in the laboratory. The specimen can be collected from the litter, just make sure it’s fresh and free of debris. When collecting the sample, makes sure to wear gloves to avoid contaminating your hand. A plastic knife or wooden tongue depressor can be used to pick up the specimen and transfer it to a sterile container than can be sealed.
