Helping your Kitty Adjust to a New Home

Even with domestication, cats are still highly territorial. It is for this reason that moving to a new environment can be a stressful experience. However, you can help make the transition between homes less stressful for your kitty.

When going to your new home, transport your pet in an adequately-sized cat carrier. Put in his favorite toy and blanket so he will have something familiar with him. Being in the crate will also make him more secure. Distress or anxiety during the trip may make your cat cranky upon reaching your new home. Let him stay in the cage and wait until all have settled down. Before letting him out of the crate, make sure all possible escape routes –doors, windows, fireplaces, etc.—are close.

To make the adjustment period easier for your kitty, it is a good idea to keep him in a room for a few days. This will give him time to get used to the daily sounds and scents of the new house and its surroundings. Be sure to put in his old bed, blanket, toys, food and water bowls, and litter tray so he has access to all the conveniences without going out of the room.

Once your kitty has settled down and adjusted to the new surroundings, you can slowly allow him to explore the entire house at will. Just be sure to keep him supervised as he goes around the house.

Be sure to have your cat checked by a Malvern veterinarian.
