Did you know that some diabetic cats like the Bengal of other breeds may need different types of medications for treatment of their diabetes? Your vet can tell you that some cats do well on oral medication while others will require insulin injections. If your cat needs insulin injections your vet can show you how to administer them. A few tips to remember in the process include not reusing syringes. Never administer if there is an air bubble in the syringe. Release the insulin back in the bottle and try again. If you inject your cat on the right side in the morning, alternate and inject her left side at night. Always reward your cat with a treat or a gentle stroke of the fur to ensure her that she is OK and doing a good job. For additional tips and suggestions on insulin injections, please call your veterinary clinic Newmarket, ON.

With the cold weather upon us, your senior cat may need help to stay comfortable. Most importantly, keep your cat from getting out of the house. Heavy winds or snow is disorienting and your cat could get lost. A night out in the cold of winter can be disastrous. Secure all doors and windows and check any other escape routes such as in the basement. Many people lower their heat when they are not at home but don’t forget that your cat is still home and act accordingly. Raise her bed off the cold floor and consider giving your cat an additional blanket or sleeping bag to keep warm. Your kitty might be a little hungrier in the winter so you can feed her more as long as she doesn’t get fat. Keep up your regular exercise routine to keep your cat flexible and for additional warmth. Learn more from your Oconomowoc, WI veterinary clinic.

Routine dental exams are part of your Russian Blue cat’s overall health and wellness. However, if it’s not time for an annual exam and your cat is having trouble chewing, give your vet a call to schedule an appointment. Difficulty chewing along with bad breath could be indications of gingivitis or other periodontal illnesses. Your vet will need to conduct a physical exam in order to determine a cause of the symptoms. If the symptoms are teeth or gum related then your vet may suggest scheduling a separate dental exam. During the dental exam your Russian Blue cat will be sedated so that the vet can thoroughly check her teeth and gums for plaque, bacteria, etc. Your vet may take this opportunity to scrape plaque or calculus build-up from the teeth, pull rotted teeth and polish the teeth. For additional information, give your veterinarian Mobile, AL a call.
