Hamsters are somewhat nocturnal so they naturally sleep throughout the day and get active at night – the complete opposite of your schedule. Don’t waken your hamster during the day since this may startle him and cause him to be aggressive. Instead take advantage of the few hours of awake time during the day and the time before you get to bed to play with your hamster and tire him out. When it is time for you to go to sleep, make sure there are plenty of toys to play with quietly while you are sleeping. If the exercise wheel squeaks, make adjustments to it or lubricate it so it is quiet. Plastic enclosures or fish tanks muffle your hamster’s sounds better than a wire cage. If all else fails, move your hamster’s cage to a place in your home where his nighttime antics won’t disturb those trying to sleep. Learn more from your Lakewood Ranch, FL veterinary clinic.

Parakeets are highly social. In your home, your parakeet’s flock is your family. Spending time with your parakeet helps it bond with you and make it more likely to feel a part of the larger flock. Your bird will need lots of time interacting with its human friends. Involve the whole family in caring for your pet. Singing and talking to your bird is pleasant for both of you and can make your bird very happy. Some parakeets do well with a radio or TV left on if they must be alone for parts of the day. Teach your parakeet to step onto your hand and finger. It takes a lot of trust to ride your hand outside the cage and again when going back in. Give your bird flight time outside the cage daily for additional socialization. Contact your Myakka, FL veterinarian for more information.

Birds are fascinating, so it’s no wonder that you’d like to bring one inside your home. Unfortunately, not everyone is ready to take care of a parrot. Here are a few different options if you prefer a bird that’s a lot easier to care for.

Canaries are a popular choice. Not only do they have bright, cheery plumage, they also fill your house with beautiful music! Choose a male if you want to hear your bird sing often.

Finches are also a great choice, although they don’t sing quite like canaries do. One thing about finches is that they come in many colors and patterns, giving you more choices.

The best thing about these two species is that they do not have to be removed from the cage. To learn more about your options, click here, or visit with your veterinarian Braselton, GA. ... Read more »
