Many children have grown up with pet dogs that have enriched their lives. When children are old enough, they should be encouraged to get involved in the care of the family’s canine resident. Caring for pets is a good training ground to learn responsibility and commitment.

Here are some fun facts about dogs that children should know:

  • Newborn puppies are blind, deaf, and don’t have any teeth. The eyes of puppies open when they are about 10-14 days old. They will start to hear sounds around 18 days of age; while their baby teeth start to come out when they are about 6 weeks old.
  • Dalmatians and Airdale Terriers are born with only one color—Dalmatians are pure white while Airdales are pure black. As they grow and develop, the color of their adult hair coat soon emerge—Dalmatians get their black spots, while it’s a mixture of gray, tan, and black for Airedales.

When most people think about training an animal, they don’t usually think about cats. However, cats are highly trainable, and an easy way to get a feline to do what you want is to provide him with treats during training.

When it comes to training cats, it’s about supporting the right behaviors more so than it is about teaching tricks. For example, if you want your cat to use his cat tree instead of jumping all over the bookcase, you can provide him with a treat every time he makes the right choice.

Treats are also a great way to help your cat become comfortable with other animals in the home. Every time he successfully spends time with another pet, provide them both with treats. They’ll become friends in no time!

Cats are fastidious groomers however, this should not mean they won’t benefit from some grooming assistance. When it comes to grooming your pet, there are important things you need to take into consideration, one of which is to take into account how much your kitty likes being handled.

Some cats don’t like being picked up or handled, and this can be a real problem if you have a long-haired cat. Long hair coats need to be brushed regularly to lessen the amount of hair lying around. Brushing also removes loose hair before they fall off to the floor or furniture, or even swallowed by the cat while he is grooming himself.

Cats that are handled frequently while still very young will learn to tolerate being handled and having a regular grooming routine. But if you have adopted a cat from the shelter, he may not be that keen on being handled or groomed. You need to be patient in teaching your new kitty that each grooming session is an enjoyable one, and not some ... Read more »

One benefit of owning a cat is the fact that they don’t have to be let outside to go potty. If dogs are highly trainable, why can’t you train a dog to use a litter box too?

Dogs and cats have different needs when it comes to going potty. Cats like to dig and bury. That’s because they are trying to hide their scent from other cats and predators in the area.

Dogs don’t have this need. As a matter of fact, they consider waste a great way to communicate with other animals! That means you won’t ever get your dog to bury his waste in a litter box. Even if he did, he would probably scatter the litter all over your floor!

If you do want your dog to go potty inside, consider puppy pads instead. To learn more, contact your vet Olathe, KS.

Choosing the right veterinarian for your pet can be difficult. One thing that will help you narrow down your choices is looking for an all-in-one veterinary clinic.

An all-in-one veterinary clinic is always a good choice because it means you only have to contact one location about all of your pet care needs. One of the largest benefits is that all-in-one clinics have a pharmacy on-site. That way, you don’t have to order your pet’s medicine from a third party.

Need to have your dog groomed? Instead of looking for recommendations in the area, you can choose to use the groomer that’s already located in your vet’s office.

Leaving town? All-in-one veterinary clinics usually provide boarding services!

By choosing just one clinic, you should only have to fill out lengthy paperwork once! To ... Read more »
