The effect of catnip in cats is similar to the one induced by marijuana and LSD in people. Considering its effects, catnip is the so-called feline hallucinogen.
The “high” that catnip induces in cats usually lasts between 5-15 minutes, and like people, the cat experiences a loss of inhibition. Although some cats may exhibit typical signs of courtship, catnip is not considered a feline aphrodisiac. The same behaviors have also been displayed in sterilized cats (spayed and neutered).
