7:43 PM Catnip Can Give Your Kitty a "High" |
The effect of catnip in cats is similar to the one induced by marijuana and LSD in people. Considering its effects, catnip is the so-called feline hallucinogen. The “high” that catnip induces in cats usually lasts between 5-15 minutes, and like people, the cat experiences a loss of inhibition. Although some cats may exhibit typical signs of courtship, catnip is not considered a feline aphrodisiac. The same behaviors have also been displayed in sterilized cats (spayed and neutered). A cat that is exposed to cats often act like fools, rolling and flopping about on the floor, drooling, and having a wonderful time. However, not all cats respond to catnip. For those who do, response usually starts when cats are about 6 months of age. The trait has been found to be inherited, with only 2 out of 3 cats being affected. Male cats have been observed to respond more strongly compared to females. A cat’s response can also depend on the quality of the catnip.
