The instinct to seek out a vantage point is still very much strong among domestic cats. Being on top enables a cat to keep an eye on what’s happening around him. This is the same instinct that protected their ancestors from potential predators in the wild; perching is also a great way to keep watch for prey.
To feed this instinct, install a cat tree or two and some window perches so your cat can have a place to spend some time and keep watch. There are also kitty furniture designed with perching areas. Being on top will also give your kitty some time alone, since cats are naturally solitary animals. They find these elevated areas a comfortable place to get away from it all, even for just a part of the day, while engaging in normal cat behavior.
