Treating Bloat in Yorkshire Terrier

Dogs like the Yorkshire Terrier that have been diagnosed with bloat should have treatment immediately to relieve pressure and pain. Bloat is a dangerous condition that is often fatal without immediate veterinarian intervention. It happens when large amounts of air or fluid forms in the stomach causing the stomach to swell. The swelling often blocks the veins from sending blood to vital organs causing low blood pressure, shock or organ damage. Immediate treatment may start with your vet inserting a tube into your Griffon’s mouth and down to the stomach to release built up pressure in the stomach area. If the stomach is twisted, a large hallow needle will be placed into the stomach to relieve pressure. Surgery may be required to untwist the stomach. If you suspect your Griffon is suffering from bloat seek immediate treatment. For more information about bloat, please contact your veterinarian Ellicott, MD.
