9:27 AM Smooth Varieties of Guinea Pigs |
Hundreds of guinea pig breeds are generally divided into two groups—smooth (self-varieties) and rough (non-self-varieties) Guinea pigs that belong to the smooth group (self-varieties) are those with short smooth coats. Within this group, there are various coat colors of individual breeds. Some of the most common ones include self reds, self creams, self whites, self blacks, dark eyed whites, and even self chocolates. There is also a satin variety, where the guinea pig’s hair reflects the light, giving it a shiny luster. Guinea pigs classified under the smooth group can also come in a mixture of colors. You have the Agouti, where the hair tip and the root have different colors; the Tortoiseshells with their red, black, and white hairs that are arranged in special patterns on their bodies; Himalayans which are marked like Siamese cats; and Dalmatians, so-called because they are white with black spots.
