Your slobbery dog with really bad breath and dirt-filled fur does not strike you as the type to worry about its food and water dish being in close proximity to where it does its business, but you thought wrong.
As far back as before dogs were even domesticated, this avid instinct to poop far away from its food source and its den, was already instinctual.
If your dog is always trying to escape from the backyard by digging under the fence or jumping the fence or just strolling off freely, you can bet it is to explore and use the “facilities” somewhere far away from its dishes and possibly its dog house.
Keep in mind, a dog’s sense of smell is hundreds of times stronger than people’s, so if poop is close by, then your dog is forced to smell it while trying to eat (dogs do not have access to air freshener).
