12:58 PM My Akita Ate a Tomato! |
You may have heard that ripened tomatoes may be safe for your Akita if given in small quantities, but did you know that un-ripened tomatoes or the leafy green parts of the tomato or vine as these may contain toxins? If you think your Akita ate something poisonous or toxic call your vet right away even if you’re not exactly sure he ate the poisonous parts. In general, tomatoes and potatoes are members of the Solanum species and are part of the nightshade family of plants, which contains toxic alkaloids that can be harmful to pets. If these toxins are eaten in large quantities your Akita may start to show signs of excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, confusion, weakness, behavior changes, dilated pupils, or even a slowed heart rate. For additional information, please contact your vet. For a list of foods that your Akita can and cannot eat, contact your Vet Clinic Coon Rapids, MN. |
