Chinchillas are desert dwelling creatures so they are not fond of water. Thus, to keep your chinchilla clean, you need to provide a sand bath. Purchase chinchilla sand from a reputable pet supply store. This sand should be a little coarse so it doesn’t cause respiratory issues. You can also buy a sand bath or use a low plastic container. Put an inch or two of sand in the bath and place it in your chinchilla’s cage for him to explore. Hopefully he’ll hop right in and roll around in the sand. This removes debris and helps to keep his coat shiny. Remove the bath from the enclosure after about 15 minutes so your pet doesn’t use it as a litter box and try another time.
