Excessive salivation can be a symptom of a health issue. While some dogs drool almost constantly, some drool all the time, while others produce little to no excess saliva at all. The saliva of dogs can be potential allergens. When dogs lick their hair coats, saliva is transferred on their fur, which can trigger allergy reactions in people that are hypersensitive to the components of the saliva.

Dog saliva possesses antibacterial properties; this is an important reason why licking their wounds can sometimes help promote healing.
