Excessive salivation can be a symptom of a health issue. While some dogs drool almost constantly, some drool all the time, while others produce little to no excess saliva at all. However, if your dog is suddenly drooling more than normal, he may be ill. Dogs also tend to drool more heavily just before vomiting, or when they are suffering from certain health issues, like poisoning.

Unlike humans, the saliva of dogs does not contain any digestive enzymes. Their saliva only helps to soften their food and ease its passageway down into the esophagus and the stomach.

The saliva of dogs can be potential allergens. When dogs lick their hair coats, saliva is transferred on their fur, which can trigger allergy reactions in people that are hypersensitive to the components of the saliva.

Dog saliva possesses antibacterial properties; this is an important reason why licking their wounds can sometimes help promote healing. But canine saliva may also contain bits of food, bacteria, etc. that can also become sources of contamination. So if a dog has licked you, always wash your hands thoroughly after. And don’t let your dog lick your face! Learn more here.
