Grains in Horse Feed

It is a fact that most horses, even the active ones, don’t need the additional calories that are present in grains. Foals that are given diets containing high amount of energy source are prone to bone and joint problems. Some adult horses may also develop muscle disorders as a result of too much intake of carbohydrates. The practice of feeding a horse extra grain during winter in an effort to keep him warm is totally wrong. It is better to feed hay for it produces more heat when digested.

Any changes in your horse’s diet should be made slowly to avoid digestive upsets, especially colic which can be very painful. Your horse can also suffer from the inflammation of the hoof (laminitis) which is also characterized by excruciating pain.

Always secure the grain bin to prevent your horse or pony from having access to its contents. Also, never allow your pet to gobble up young green pastures after fall.

Ask your Simpsonville vet for more information about the dietary needs of your pet horse. Check out this link.
