Cat Breed Profile: Bombay Cats

Bombay cats are popular for looking like miniature panthers. These short-haired black felines are named after Bombay, a city in India, which is also known as the land of the black leopard.

Bombay kittens are not really that remarkable and won’t warrant a second look, especially if you are not aware of their breed. However, as they turn 4 months old, their black hair coat take on a lustrous satin-like shine and their eye color becomes a stunning gold.

Being social creatures, they love to be around people, especially ones they are familiar with. These black cats are very affectionate and make great pets for families with children.

Bombay cats are said to be a result of crossing a Burmese cat and a black American Shorthair. The breed was created during the late 1950s by an American cat breeder, Nikki Horner; and accepted by the Cat Fancier’s Association in 1976.
