5:04 PM Aspergillosis In Pet Birds |
Aspergillosis is caused by a fungus that invades the respiratory system of birds. Very young birds whose immune systems are still developing and those with compromised immune systems are more prone becoming ill. The infection is very common in pet parrots. Hawks and falcons that are kept in captivity are also susceptible to aspergillosis. The important predisposing factors of aspergillosis include unsanitary conditions, poor nutrition, an existing illness, injury to the respiratory system, and prolonged use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids or antibiotics. Poor ventilation, dusty environment, poor sanitation, and close confinement increase the chance of acquiring the infection. The fungus thrives well in decaying organic matter. Affected birds show symptoms that are similar to human flu, such as nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, abnormal droppings, diarrhea, and eye crustiness.Birds can acquire the infection by inhaling microscopic spores of the fungus that are airborne. A round of antibiotics can successfully treat Aspergillosis when it is caught early. But chronic cases have a poor prognosis even with treatment. You should seek help from your Glen Burnie, MD vet if you notice sudden changes in your pet’s health and/or behavior. Schedule an appointment today! |
