Did you know that the Basset hound was originally bred to hunt? That’s right; these short legged, slow to move canines were bred by the French aristocracy to hunt rabbits. That may sound a little strange considering the Basset’s slow pace and somewhat lazy temperament; however, the breed’s characteristics happen to be on the mark for hunting. For instance, the Basset’s short legs keep him close to the ground where he can maintain the rabbit’s scent. Because he moves slowly, hunters are able to keep up with him and track rabbits alongside him. In addition, the Basset’s long ears help track scent as they drag along the ground. This makes the Basset not only a member of the hound family, but a recognized breed for hunting. In fact, he is one of six officially recognized “Basset” breeds of France. Insulin injections are one of the most popular forms of treatment available for cats with feline diabetes. If your Japanese Bobtail has been diagnosed with diabetes, talk to your vet to find out if insulin injections will be recommended. There are other medications available in pill form, but these are mostly for less advanced stages of diabetes. If you will be giving your bobtail insulin injections there are a few tips to remember to help with the process. First, do not reuse syringes. Never administer if there is an air bubble in the syringe. If you inject your bobtail on the right side one day then you should inject the left side the next day. If your cat does not cooperate, talk to your vet about making adjustments to the way you administer the injections. Always reward your cat with a treat afterwards. For additional tips and suggestions talk with your veterinarian Fox Chapel, PA.

As pet owners, we need to be attentive to the kinds of things we throw in the garbage or keep lying around the house. Our feline friends often become overly curious and can get into foods that are bad for them. For instance, moldy foods or foods can produce toxins called tremorgenic mycotoxins that can cause life threatening illnesses if eaten by an Aegean or other breed of cat. These toxins can cause body tremors that extend all over the body and can lead to convulsions that may lead to death. If your Aegean has eaten anything remotely moldy call your vet right away even if symptoms aren’t present. It’s better to be safe and have your cat checked out then to have him go into convulsions because of digested mold. When tossing out old food, make sure the bag is tied securely. If your Golden is drinking from the toilet you may want to call your vet just to check, but in most cases your dog is going to be fine. There are; however, occasions when you should be alarmed.
