Interesting Facts about the Basset Hound

Did you know that the Basset hound was originally bred to hunt? That’s right; these short legged, slow to move canines were bred by the French aristocracy to hunt rabbits. That may sound a little strange considering the Basset’s slow pace and somewhat lazy temperament; however, the breed’s characteristics happen to be on the mark for hunting. For instance, the Basset’s short legs keep him close to the ground where he can maintain the rabbit’s scent. Because he moves slowly, hunters are able to keep up with him and track rabbits alongside him. In addition, the Basset’s long ears help track scent as they drag along the ground. This makes the Basset not only a member of the hound family, but a recognized breed for hunting. In fact, he is one of six officially recognized “Basset” breeds of France.
