You will be bringing a pet into your home soon and you know that your child is eager to meet him. How can you teach her to interact with him safely?

Your child needs you to take her age and maturity level into account when it comes to teaching her about a pet. This will help you determine how to appropriately set boundaries with her and what advice could be helpful. Talk about what she can expect when spending time with an animal and let her know how to appropriately approach him. Help her understand that this is a living thing that will require love and care, just like she does.  Roles play with her if necessary and be sure to always supervise your child when interacting with a pet. Diabetes in canines like the Irish Setter can first make an appearance in the form of weight loss, excessive thirst, excessive urination, lack of energy, depression, lethargy, hunger, vomiting, enlarged liver, cataracts, bladder, kidney infection or even obesity in your dog. Sometimes, though, these symptoms aren’t enough to determine the positive presence of diabetes. Instead, your vet will need to conduct a thorough examination of your dog. It’s a good idea to set up an exam at the first sign of symptoms in your pup. Your vet may need to do a physical exam of your pup as well as run blood work and a urinary analysis. Positive tests often show abnormally high levels of sugar in the blood and urine when diabetes is present. After your vet makes a diagnosis, causes, symptoms, and treatment options can be discussed. To learn more, talk with your veterinarian Lafayette, LA.

Your dog is a wonderful companion and taking him out and about with you is something you look forward to doing. Would a set of booties help with this?

While there are many places you can take your pet where his paws won’t need any additional protection, there are still many where it will be required. Certain weather conditions may also call for their use from time to time as well. Booties may make a bit of a fashion statement, but they are also a functional pet supply item. They help keep your pet’s sensitive paw pads from getting burned on hot asphalt and too cold on icy roads. They also help keep substances off her paws, like salt used on sidewalks. Rough terrain that can damage her paws can also be improved by the barrier that ... Read more »

You may have noticed that the pet aisle of your local super market or even Target or Wal-Mart does not have a large variety of cat toys. This is not surprising. Cats tend to be extremely picky about their toys. If you want to purchase a cat toy, look for toys that will encourage movement and exercise. A mouse on a string, a wind up mouse, or even a mouse stuffed with catnip that can be tossed around the house are all good options. Be cautious on the catnip, however. Too much catnip can make your cat hyper. If your cat isn’t interested in these typical toys, try giving him a simple cardboard box. Some cats love to play in the cat litter box or the box that their canned cat food comes in. Boxes often make the best cat toys. Avoid allowing your cat play with plastic bags. Rabbits that live outdoors are generally used to all kinds of outside noises. They grow up learning that some noises are just part of the environment. However, firework displays and loud booms and clouds of smoke are not the average sights and sounds. If your rabbit lives outside and you know there’s going to be fireworks (i.e. the 4th of July, New Year’s, and many evenings in the summer months) bring your rabbit indoors. The loud noises of the fireworks can cause your rabbit to panic and become anxious and afraid. He has nowhere to go and may start pacing frantically in his cage. This pacing can be harmful to his health if it goes too long. Move him indoors to an interior room where the loud boom of the fireworks won’t be so loud. Pet him, talk to ... Read more »

Did you know that it’s possible for your turtle to overheat in the summer months? Some turtles like to live in tropical type temperatures, but even turtles have their limits when it comes to how hot it can get. Help your turtle stay cool by monitoring the temperature in his habitat. If he’s too hot, move his cage to a cooler part of the house. Avoid placing your turtle in direct sunlight for long periods of time. In addition, use a thermometer to monitor the exact temperature inside the cage. Cut back on heating lamps in the summer as this will be too much. Make sure your turtle has plenty of cool dirt to burrow in. Keep his water levels topped off with cool, fresh water. If your turtle is showing signs of lethargy or not eating then he may be too hot. Call < ... Read more »

Contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few cats that have the personalities and breeding for daily walks. If your cat enjoys walking on a leash and harness then you’ll definitely want to find suitable places to walk your cat especially in the city. First things first, ask your vet if he knows of any good trails or walkways where you can walk your cat. Check your city’s chamber of commerce website or ask local pet stores or groomers if they have suggestions. If possible, choose a walking trail on the outside of the city where there’s less traffic. If you walk your cat in the city itself, make sure to stay on the sidewalk and only cross the street at crosswalks. Be prepared to carry your cat in overly crowded situations or if you come in contact with dogs. Your veterinarian Somerville, ... Read more »

Does your cat like to go for walks with you? If so, you may find that walking in the early morning or the evening is the best and most comfortable time to walk. When walking at night, make sure you protect yourself and your cat by wearing reflecting clothing. Your cat should be on reflective leash and wearing a reflective collar or harness. You should also be wearing a reflective vest or safety gear of some type. Carry a flash light as well. This can light your path as well as serve as another signal to motorists and other pedestrians that you are there. It’s not recommended that you walk your cat off leash especially at night since she could easily run off and be hard to find in the dark. Carry water if you will be out long even if it’s cool out.
