Your dog will jump up on people if you encourage him to do so as a puppy. However, it is far less endearing when your dog is at his adult size. Thus you need to discourage him from jumping up and give him something more appropriate to do. Whenever your dog starts to jump up on you, turn around quickly so your dog fails to the floor. Don’t make a fuss but praise him and give him a treat when all four feet are on the floor. Encourage all household members and trusted guests to follow this simple procedure. Never punish or yell at your dog while he is learning. Soon your dog will get the message that jumping up is not appropriate. Anticipate when he will jump up and insist that your dog sit by you. If he is sitting, he can’t be jumping up on people. Contact your Matthews, NC vet to learn more.

Your hamster is always seeking out something to chew on and you’ve noticed that there are a lot of pet supply items that are made for pets like yours to gnaw on. Why is this?

While chewing may be a fun way for your pet to pass the time, it’s also an essential part of caring for himself. This is because his teeth are continually growing. This growth may ensure that he has strong, healthy teeth to use when needed, but it also means that they need to be tended to regularly. Chewing helps to file them down a bit so they don’t get so long that they break and it also rounds out any sharp edges that may be present so your pet doesn’t injure himself while simply trying to go about his day. Most cat food manufacturers offer a series of foods that support your cat’s dietary needs throughout the varying stages of her life. Kitten food offers extra protein to support her developing brain and growing muscles and bones. However, when your cat reaches her first birthday, this kitten food provides too many calories and can contribute to obesity. Thus you need to switch to an adult formula food. You can continue with this food for most of your cat’s life but consider switching to an adult or mature formula food once she starts showing signs of aging. There are also specialized foods that help manage specific health issues such as weight control, urinary tract support or hairball control. Some of these foods are only available by prescription. Birds like to be the center of attention. If you have a bird at home, make sure you provide him with plenty of toys and opportunities to keep himself busy. For instance, toys for the cage may include the hanging wooden toys that have bells on them and string hanging from them. Birds love chewing on wood and string. They also enjoy hearing the bell ring. If your bird is especially vocal he may imitate the sound of the bell too. Providing different perches in the cage is also a good way to keep your bird entertained. Mirrors in front of the food and water bowls work too. Toys for outside of the cage may include a little ball to roll or push around. Creative toys that you can store treats are also great toys. These motivate your bird to solve a puzzle in order to get a treat. For more ideas, click here, or contact your Farmers Branch, veterinary clinic.

If you’re planning a road trip and your rabbit is going along with you, make sure you plan ahead and schedule in extra stop and rest times for your rabbit. Your rabbit will need a break from the moving vehicle. He might even need to get out of his cage and stretch his legs. If this happens, make sure you put a harness and leash on your rabbit. Whether your rabbit is well trained or not he needs to be secured and unable to escape from you. He may panic and try to run because the area is unfamiliar. Keep him on his leash and walk him around just a bit. Take these rest stops as an opportunity to feed your rabbit his meals or snacks. Check his water bottle to make sure he’s drinking as well.
