If you have made up your mind about purchasing a red-eared slider turtle, consider heading to a turtle rescue or turtle adoption organization as opposed to visiting a pet store. There is no shortage of turtles waiting for a home at these places. Note that when you bring home your turtle, it may not come out for several days!

When setting up a tank for your red-eared slider turtle, understand that your turtle will require both a UVB light and a heat light. In order for your turtle to stay healthy, it will especially need the UVB lamp. You will need to replace the bulbs every six months. On the other hand, the heat light is essential for keeping the basking area at the required temperature which is 10 degrees above the water’s temperature. Note that your turtle should not be able to access the light!

First, if you have added an unfamiliar rat to a mix of adult rats that have already coexisted for some time as a group, remove the unfamiliar rat as soon as possible in order to lower stress levels in the environment.

Secondly, avoid putting anything in the cage that emits a foreign scent as this will lead to relentless investigation by your pet rats or make them unnecessarily aggressive.

Third, make sure that each rat has access to its own food bowl, water bottle, and hiding place in the event that it wants to use any of these and doesn’t feel like sharing it with another rat.

Using visual barriers is a great way to keep the rats from focusing on one another in their cage. Setting up several shelters is also a good idea.

Approximately 50-65% of skin cancer cases in cats are malignant. A cat’s habit of napping under the sun exposes them to the damaging rays of the sun. Cats with white or light colored fur and those with short fur or no fur also have a greater risk for skin cancer.

Cats without protection will get burned when exposed to the sun for too long, as manifested by the redness and tenderness of the skin. Repeated burns on cats can progress to a more serious burn which will ultimately end in squamous cell carcinoma.

One way of keeping your cat protected is by applying a UV film over your windows to reduce the amount of harmful rays that can get in. Another way is using sunscreen with UVA and UVB coverage, with an SPF of 15 or higher, on your pet. Some body parts like the nose, ears, belly, groin and legs are more exposed and so application should be focused in these areas.

Be sure to have your cat checked b ... Read more »

You’d almost think that your pet, dog or cat, is race-confused.

No, it is not. Cats crave a better meal. Dogs usually just want to eat everything that’s not protected by maximum-security locks.

However, cats eating dog food can actually be dangerous if they are purely eating dog food. Cats require a special amino acid known as “taurine”, and they can receive this through their food. Dogs, on the other hand, produce taurine within their own bodies. Dog food does not have taurine in it, but cat food does, and if your cat does not get the proper amount of taurine in their diet, this can lead to severe problems with your cat.

At the veterinarian South Temecula, you can read more here on their website regarding how to get your pet back to its normal food, or how better to regulate their diet.

The Cymric is often considered the long-haired version of the Manx. Its name is derived from the word “Cyru”, a Welsh name for Wales. Both the Manx and the Cymric originated from the Isle of Man, a place near Wales.

Before being accepted by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), the Cymric was first exhibited as a “Manx Mutant” or Longhaired Manx. The breed’s name was eventually changed to Cymric in the mid-70s.

Cymrics possess a loyal and gentle disposition. It can live well with other pets, especially dogs.

Highly intelligent, the Cymric can easily be trained to perform tricks. However, it can easily get injured when jumping from high places, thus it is best to prevent your feline friend from reaching high shelves.

Although it has been granted Championship status, the CFA changed the breed’s name to Long ... Read more »

Cats are nocturnal animals by nature. They can’t help it. Cats, bats, and other such animals are instinctually used to hunting by night, and so this is why, when you’re trying to sleep, your cat thinks it’s playtime.

Cats don’t like being lonely. No one does. So, when the family’s asleep (or trying to be) and your cat is in an empty living room, or wherever it’s allowed, your cat becomes lonely and may start to “cry” out of a desire to have company.

If you desire to, and if it won’t disrupt your schedule the next day, you can get up and play with kitty for a while, then go back to sleep, but then your cat will become used to that, and will come to expect it from you every single night.

You’ve had a rough day at work. You’ve just walked in the door after an exhausting day, and a bundle of excitement, joy, and fur is eagerly awaiting you.

This is your dog, and your dog has missed you terribly.

You’ve received a phone call from a neighbor telling you that your dog was whining and howling all day. This is because Fido misses you, and had no one to play with for the day, except for a chew toy on the floor that doesn’t give it any attention.

A couple of ways to help ease separation anxiety in dogs is to take them for a walk prior to going to work, and do not make a big deal about saying goodbye to your dog before you leave for work, as the dog will learn to fear that moment. If you just say “bye” and walk out, your dog will not feel as fearful.

At the veterinary clinic Reynoldsburg, the vet can help you with decreasing the amount of separation anxiety in your dog, and help them to cope with their feelin ... Read more »

There have likely been times where a dog has barked at someone walking down the street…from your house. Dogs bark at strangers not just to alert them to the dog’s presence, but to also warn the stranger not to cross onto their “territory”.

One way to help reduce this barking in your dog is, when your dog barks near you when a stranger walks by, acknowledge it calmly. If the dog persists in barking, then you become firm, but not shouting, to tell the dog not to bark. If he persists still, you would remove him from the room altogether. With this time, your dog can eventually cease or lower its barks to a minimum.

Visit here for more information at the veterinarian Cumberland County. Your dog can be trained to not bark at strangers, but it just takes time.

Obesity is now viewed as an epidemic that is affecting many dogs and cats in the US and in many countries around the world. Just as in people, carrying excess weight contributes to a large number of health problems in pets—such as diabetes mellitus, arthritis, respiratory and heart problems, and even some forms of cancer.

Obesity in pets is primarily attributed to consuming more calories than what is being used throughout the day. Indoor pets are usually at risk for being overweight because of their sedentary lifestyle.

Overall, obesity certainly reduces your pet’s quality of life and may eventually shorten his lifespan. Studies have shown that dogs possessing ideal body conditions live, on average, 15% longer compared to obese pets.

The first step to addressing obesity in pets is to assess the feeding regimen. It is&n ... Read more »

Not all dogs require frequent bathing. Long-haired dog breeds need to be groomed regularly compared to short-haired breeds. When bathing your pet, use only products which are specially designed for dogs, for these are more compatible to your dog’s hair and skin than those products which are formulated for people.

While shampooing, be careful about not getting shampoo in your puppy’s eyes. You should also ensure that water does not get inside his ears. When bathing your pet indoors, a non-slip rubber mat placed on the floor of the tub can prevent your dog from slipping.

Ear cleaning should also be included in your puppy’s grooming regimen. Check his ears regularly for dirt, debris, or signs of infection. Persistent scratching or head-shaking may be signs of irritation on the external ears and along the ear canal.

Bathing and ear cleaning are important aspects of keeping your pet healthy. As ... Read more »
