Obesity in Pets

Obesity is now viewed as an epidemic that is affecting many dogs and cats in the US and in many countries around the world. Just as in people, carrying excess weight contributes to a large number of health problems in pets—such as diabetes mellitus, arthritis, respiratory and heart problems, and even some forms of cancer.

Obesity in pets is primarily attributed to consuming more calories than what is being used throughout the day. Indoor pets are usually at risk for being overweight because of their sedentary lifestyle.

Overall, obesity certainly reduces your pet’s quality of life and may eventually shorten his lifespan. Studies have shown that dogs possessing ideal body conditions live, on average, 15% longer compared to obese pets.

The first step to addressing obesity in pets is to assess the feeding regimen. It is recommended to give two or three small meals each day, rather than keeping the bowl full. This will allow the body to use calories more efficiently while piling on less fat.
