10:07 AM Why Dogs Twitch While Sleeping |
Have you notice your dog suddenly twitching or shivering in his sleep? You may also see his feet moving, and/or he may also give off a small bark or grunt. Many animal behavior experts interpret these body movements as dreaming in dogs. Studies have demonstrated that there are three stages of sleep in dogs – non-rapid eye movement (NREM), rapid eye movement (REM), and short-wave sleep (SWS). As dogs dream, they involuntarily display certain body movements during REM sleep. A dog that curls up when sleeping often have less movements because his muscles are more tense compared to a dog that stretches out when he sleeps. These involuntary movements are not really something to be worried about but when your pooch appears distressed or frightened, he may be having a ‘nightmare’. Awaken him up gently by speaking to him in soothing tones. Your pet will benefit from regular health checks and dental visits to your vet clinic Salem, VA. |
