Sheepdog trials are still very popular in hill farming areas in Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. It is a competitive sport participated in by herding dog breeds. Each participating dog moves sheep around gates, enclosures, field, or fences as directed by its handler.

Many competitive herding events are sponsored by prestigious kennel clubs and associations around the world including the American Kennel Club (AKC), American Herding Breeds Association (AHBA), and the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASDA). Sheepdog trials usually take place in arenas, although there are some that are held in open fields.

Many breeds of dogs take part in these trials. All breeds classified under the Herding Group by the AKC as well as some other dog breeds that have been approved for herding in the recent years such as giant Schnauzers, Samoyeds, Rottweilers, and soft-coated Wheaten terriers.
