When you, the owner of your cat, or a guest steps into your cat’s home, or territory, your cat usually ends up rubbing itself up against that person (or you). The reason a cat does this is because it is “marking” that person, indicating that that person is the property of that cat. This is usually done as a way to ward off other cats or animals that would try to “claim” that person.

A cat’s major scent glands are located in its cheeks, and you probably would notice that your cat usually tries to rub its cheeks against the person’s legs or something. If you notice this, know that your cat is simply helping to get its scent onto that person.
