Purring: What your cat is really telling you

There's nothing quite like cuddling up with a purring feline. Many believe cats purr to indicate they are in a good mood - and sometimes that's true. But your veterinarian will tell you your cat purrs for other reasons, too. If your cat is stretched out in a strip of sunlight coming through the window and is purring, you can probably assume she's content. But if she's purring, pacing and intermittently meowing, it could very well mean she's hungry. Excessive purring can also indicate your feline friend is in pain.

Some veterinarians suggest purring is a way cats can calm themselves when they're hurting. Also, purring can ease breathing and lessen pain for cats. If you notice your cat purring more than usual but not looking content, examine her to make sure she shows no outward signs of injury. If you can't see anything but the excessive purring continues, it might be a good idea to consult your Vancouver veterinarian.
