Your cat can care for herself in many ways, but there are still some tasks that require your assistance. Brushing her fur, for example, is something that your pet can’t so on her own. So how often should you be brushing her?

Every cat will have different needs, so take the time to determine what brushing frequency would benefit your pet the most. Shorthaired cats will likely need to be brushed about once a week, but some, particularly those that get quite dirty outside, may need more frequent attention. Longhaired cats will need to be brushed more often. Some will even require daily brushing in order to keep their fur clean and tangle free. Choosing the appropriate brush for your cat’s coat is important as well. Be sure to choose an option that suits your cat’s needs.

Although many people believe that cat allergies are a result of long hair, this simply isn’t true. But if people aren’t allergic to cat hair, what are they allergic to?

In most cases, people are allergic to a cat’s saliva. And because cats regularly groom themselves, people may have an adverse reaction to cat hair because of the dried saliva that’s on it. In some cases, people can actually be allergic to the cat’s skin itself. When the cat sheds skin cells, people with a cat allergy may experience increased symptoms.

Although cat allergies can be a nuisance, there are some things you can do to lessen your symptoms. Provide your cat with a bath regularly or invest in anti-allergy cat wipes. Your doctor may also be able to desensitize you with shots.
