Although many people believe that cat allergies are a result of long hair, this simply isn’t true. But if people aren’t allergic to cat hair, what are they allergic to?
In most cases, people are allergic to a cat’s saliva. And because cats regularly groom themselves, people may have an adverse reaction to cat hair because of the dried saliva that’s on it. In some cases, people can actually be allergic to the cat’s skin itself. When the cat sheds skin cells, people with a cat allergy may experience increased symptoms.
Although cat allergies can be a nuisance, there are some things you can do to lessen your symptoms. Provide your cat with a bath regularly or invest in anti-allergy cat wipes. Your doctor may also be able to desensitize you with shots.
