Did you know that cats can get diabetes just like dogs and even people? If your cat eats a high sugary diet then he may be prone to developing diabetes. In animals, the disease can often occur because the cat doesn’t produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced in the pancreas and is in charge of regulating the flow of glucose in the bloodstream. A lack of insulin can cause the cat’s body to start breaking down fat and protein preserves in order to provide itself with energy. Energy should, however, come from fats, carbohydrates and proteins consumed in the daily diet not stored proteins and fats. Because of this imbalance, your cat may start to lose weight and develop high blood sugar. You will need to take your cat to the vet for blood work and an exam. Speak with your vet North Dallas, TX to learn more. |
