Behavior Problems in Dogs - Digging and Chewing

Digging and chewing are two of the most common behavior problems in pet dogs. Here are important reasons for these behaviors and how pet owners can address these problems.

Digging

Digging is a natural instinct in dogs. While some dogs can be successfully taught to refrain from engaging in the habit, it can be difficult to eliminate in some dogs. Training a dog to stop digging involves catching him in the act. Say “no” in a firm but calm voice, and distract him with a toy. You should correct him when he is digging, not afterward. You may give him a place in your backyard where he can dig to his heart’s content. Introduce him to the spot by burying some of his favorite toys and letting him dig them out.

Chewing

For puppies, chewing is a way to explore their surroundings. It also gives them a feeling of calm and security. However, it is a destructive behavior, and without proper intervention by the owner, a puppy will soon chew objects that are potential health hazards. Offering some chew toys will give him ‘legal’ items to chew.
