Onions and garlic are toxic to pets because they contain sulfur compounds that are converted into oxidizing agents and cause the rupture of red blood cells in cats, dogs, and to some degree, birds. Affected dogs can suffer from severe anemia if the problem is not corrected immediately. Onions that are grown in soil that is rich in sulfur have been shown to be more toxic than other onions.
The sulfur compounds in onion and garlic can irritate tissues of the mouth and esophagus. The crop of birds can also be affected. In severe cases, there may be ulceration of the surface of the digestive tract.
