Do you own a Cardigan Welsh Corgi? If so, then talk with your vet about the health risks associated with this particular breed. For instance, one of the most significant diseases is Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). DM is an incurable disease of the nerves and spinal cord, which can cause loss of mobility and numbness or loss of feeling in the legs. It is often compared to ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease in humans. DM is considered to be a fatal, chronic, progressive, degenerative disease that leads to eventual paralysis. Signs or symptoms of the disease usually appear later in life in most dogs and affects the hind limbs causing a decrease in mobility. As it progresses, the dog will lose all feeling in his legs. There is no treatment for this disease. However, some owners have found various types of physical therapy to help prolong quality of life. If your vet has diagnosed your Bengal with FeLV or the Feline Leukemia Virus then you should talk to him about possible treatment or management plans for your cat. FeLV is a virus that can cause anemia, lymphoma, and a suppressed immune system in cats. The virus is not contagious to other animals or people. There is no cure for FeLV and most treatment options are for the purpose of prolonging your cat’s quality of life. If your Bengal tests positive for FeLV at an early stage and is healthy then he could possibly resist the virus or clear it on his own. However, younger cats and older cats tend to be unable to fight the virus on their own. Treatment can be given to keep your cat comfortable and to prevent secondary infections caused by a compromised immune system. Talk to your veterinary clinic Marietta, GA about other ways to keep your Bengal comfortable. Learn more here.

As a general rule, horses of all breeds (including the Quarter horse) tend to have a mind all their own. Horses may be beautiful creatures, but they are also strong and independent creatures as well. Remembering horses are wild animals with wild instinctive behaviors is important. For instance, your vet can tell you that one such instinctive behavior in horses includes food aggression. If you have more than one horse, you may need to feed each of them in a separate stall to avoid a fight. If your horses do not have access to stalls then separate them in the pasture during feedings. When giving hay, be sure to make several piles in your pasture so that each horse can forage and graze without feeling threatened by one of the other horses. If your horse is aggressive around food you may want to train him for in hand feedings. Ask your vet Olathe, KS for more suggestions. More information here: http://oakbrookanim ... Read more »

Are you looking for a blanket or several blankets for your Thoroughbred to wear this winter? If so then you may want to shop for a set based on your horse’s living conditions. If you’re not sure what your horse needs in his particular environment just give your vet a call for assistance. It’s important to remember, each horse is different and his blanketing needs will be different as well. Don’t forget that not all horse owners are going to blanket alike even if the horses are in the same barn. Some may go all out and by everything from a sheet to a heavyweight with a hood so their horse can wear something different every time the weather changes. Other owners may buy a light and medium weighted blanket and simply layer them up if needed. Your veterinary clinic Olathe, KS can help you make the best choice for your Thoroughbred. Did you know there are different types of blankets available for your Thoroughbred? In fact, blanket fabrics can be water proof, water resistant, and even water repellent. Blankets also have different types of fill, weight and denier. If you’re not familiar with these terms, talk with your vet or local tack shop retailer. One of the main things you will need to know when searching for the right blanket or sheet is whether you should be looking for something that is water proof, water resistant or water repellent. Water resistant offers the lowest level of protection against water entering through the blanket. Water repellent simply means the blanket repels water, but it does not completely keep it out. Water proof is the highest level of protection against water in that it does not allow water to penetrate the blanket layers and will keep your horse dry. For other blanketing options, ask your veterinaria ... Read more »

The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a leading cause of death among cats. It is a virus and suppresses the immune system so an infected cat is likely to succumb from infection. This virus is transmitted through the bodily fluids of cats and cannot affect dogs or humans. Grooming and fighting among cats are common ways to transmit the virus. Kittens can be infected through their mother’s milk. Fortunately, your cat can be vaccinated and protected against FeLV. You will need regular vaccinations and testing to make sure your cat hasn’t be infected. Even indoor cats should be vaccinated since they may slip outside and run into infected cats. If your cat is infected, you can treat the symptoms of the disease but eventually it will cause death. And you must keep your cat inside in the future to avoid infecting other cats. For your information, contact your Aurora, CO veterinarian.

Your cat needs a litter box in order to enjoy her life within your home, and you want to make sure you are offering her everything she needs. How can you make sure this part of your home is always kept up to her liking?

Your cat will have her own personal preferences when it comes to her litter box, but most will simply need an area where she can get some privacy to utilize it as needed. She will also need it to stay clean, as she may avoid it if this isn’t the case. This will require regular spot cleanings on a daily basis, and more thorough clean outs roughly once a week. This will mean replacing the old litter with a fresh option for your cat to use in the coming week. Your local Greenville, SC veterinarian can offer additional suggestions. Your dog may be able to do a lot of wonderful things on his own, but keeping clean isn’t likely one of them. Your pet will probably need quite a bit of help when it comes to keeping himself from growing smelly. Luckily, there are two ways you can help your pet stay clean that will help eliminate odors if you are noticing them, or prevent them if they haven’t come about yet.

Your pet will need to be bathed regularly in order to keep clean, and this will require products that are designed specifically for canine use. This will help reduce dirt and buildup in his fur and on his skin. His oral hygiene should also be addressed through regular teeth brushings. These will help keep plaque and tartar to a minimum as well as help to freshen his breath. Your local Greenville, SC veterinarian can help you care for your pet. Learn more here.
