9:08 AM Feline Leukemia and Your Cat |
The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a leading cause of death among cats. It is a virus and suppresses the immune system so an infected cat is likely to succumb from infection. This virus is transmitted through the bodily fluids of cats and cannot affect dogs or humans. Grooming and fighting among cats are common ways to transmit the virus. Kittens can be infected through their mother’s milk. Fortunately, your cat can be vaccinated and protected against FeLV. You will need regular vaccinations and testing to make sure your cat hasn’t be infected. Even indoor cats should be vaccinated since they may slip outside and run into infected cats. If your cat is infected, you can treat the symptoms of the disease but eventually it will cause death. And you must keep your cat inside in the future to avoid infecting other cats.
