Parakeets are often adopted as first birds or beginner birds so buying a cage, some seeds and a few toys seems like adequate care. However, parakeets on an all-seed diet may not stay healthy and a shorter life span. Start with a high-quality parakeet seed mix but be aware that this should only make up about a quarter of your bird’s diet. Even nutritionally complete pellets are not enough since they are overly processed and fatty. Sprouting seeds and giving your parakeet grains, peas and legumes adds nutrition and is yummy for your bird. Vegetables such as dark, leafy greens should be given to your bird daily. And fruit is a nice treat once or twice a week. Remove uneaten food daily and clean all bowls frequently especially if they are contaminated with droppings or feathers. Give your bird access to clean, fresh water at all times. Contact your Niwot, CO vet to learn more.
