A “backyard breeder” is a person with little knowledge or experience concerning breeding of dogs. These persons are often in it for the profit rather than for making good genetic matches and having their dogs registered with official kennel clubs. However, a backyard breeder is not viewed to be as unethical as people running puppy mills.
There are backyard breeders who let their purebred dogs mate without any knowledge of their health and behavioral histories. These people don’t bother to give particular attention to genetic health issues that may affect both parents and puppies.
Many potential pet owners buy puppies from backyard breeders because they often charge less money for them compared to reputable dog breeders. Although a puppy may seem less expensive, there is always the possibility of ending up paying more money for health issues that may develop later in life.
