Jumping Behavior in Dogs

If your pet dog loves jumping up on people, particularly visitors, try putting him in another room when visitors arrive. Give treats to your guests to be given to your dog; instruct them to ask your pet to sit before offering the treat. This will eventually teach your pooch to sit in front of visitors as he comes out from the room, instead of jumping up on them.

When addressing your pet’s jumping behavior, make sure all household members are also participating in the regimen. A dog won’t understand why some members of the household allow jumping while others don’t.

If your dog loves jumping up on you as you enter the house, this usually shows how overly excited he is with your arrival, but failed to get any attention as you walked in through the door. Jumping up on you is his way of trying to catch your attention. Even if you yell at him to stop and try to push him off, this is still attention, and often viewed by dogs as a reward for the behavior.
