2:06 AM What To Do If Your Pet Suffers From Heat Stress |
As temperatures soar during sweltering summer days, cats and dogs have higher risks of being overheated and suffering from heat stress. Here are some ways to help cool down your pet and bring back his body temperature to a normal range.
- Spray or sprinkle water all over your pet’s body. NEVER pour or immerse your pet in ice cold water because this can cause the skin’s blood vessels to constrict, leading to a decrease of blood flow to the area. When this happens, it can be difficult for heat to evaporate from the body. Wrap your pet’s feet in damp towels, making sure to avoid overdoing it for this may bring the body temperature down pretty quickly and lead to hypothermia, which can also be equally risky.
- Experts don’t recommend giving energy drinks or electrolyte supplements to pets suffer from heat stress or hyperthermia.
- A dog or cat suffering from serious heatstroke may have dark red gums and pant excessively. They may also be vomiting and diarrhea. These life-threatening symptoms need immediate veterinary attention; take your pet to your nearest Cy-Fair animal hospital. Set an appointment at this website Fairfield Animal Hospital.
