7:47 AM What Causes Ear Inflammation In Puppies? |
Inflammatory conditions of the ears are generally referred to as otitis. The problem may be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (ongoing for a considerable length of time). Puppies with floppy ears are more predisposed to developing otitis than dog breeds with erect ears or those that have their ears cropped. About 80% of ear problems in dogs that are brought to the attention of veterinarians are those with floppy ears. Poor air circulation in the ear canal promotes moisture within the passages creating the perfect environment for the growth and multiplication of yeast and bacteria. Otitis occurs when anything throws off the normal balance of the ear secretions. Getting soap or water in the ears after swimming in the lake or during a bath, ear mites, foreign bodies, ticks, allergies, or ticks are all potential causes of otitis. Most ear infections are confined to the external part of the ear and are referred to as “otitis externa”. Veterinary attention is needed to prevent the problem from spreading to the middle ear and into the inner ear. Learn more here. |
