Water Requirements of a Horse

Horses need a constant supply of fresh clean water, as water is a basic nutrient for health and wellbeing. To satisfy a horse’s need for water, there should be water available in the stable and pasture. Dehydration is often a major concern while traveling, long trail rides, or during events. Thus water must be offered frequently during these times.

The amount of water needed by a horse will differ greatly between horses. Several factors can affect the amount of water that a horse needs. These include:

  • Environmental temperature
  • Type of feed consumed (grass versus dry fodder)
  • Size
  • Health
  • Whether a mare is pregnant or nursing

Dehydration in horses can be deadly, thus water should be available at all times. Chronic insufficient water intake can contribute to poor health. During winter months when the diet of a horse mainly consists of dry hay, a lack of water can cause impactions that can predispose colic.

Water can be supplied in stables using buckets or automatic waterers. The latter is more convenient; however, it is quite difficult to monitor the amount of water your horse is consuming. Also some horses don’t know how to use automatic waterers, or dislike the noise made by some types of waterers.
