Treatment Option For Hyperthyroidism In Cats – Radioactive Iodine Therapy

The administration of radioactive iodine therapy is fast becoming the treatment of choice. Radioactive iodine works by finding and destroying affected tissue without harming normal thyroid cells. The patient has to be confined in the vet clinic for several days (5-14 days) until his radioactive levels are reduced to what’s acceptable. During this time, the pet owner may visit their pet, but they can only view them through a special window.

This treatment option provides a permanent cure in about 95% of cats diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. There are no known serious side effects, and it’s also safe and less stressful to the cat. However, it can be expensive and the cat must undergo several tests to ensure that they are in good health before treatment is commenced. The possibility that the cat may develop hypothyroidism exists, but it can be corrected with thyroid supplementation.
