Treating DM in Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Degenerative Myelopathy or DM is an incurable disease of the nerves and spinal cord. It can cause loss of feeling or numbness in the legs and eventual loss of mobility. The disease itself is not usually painful, however the lack of mobility can cause your dog stress and anxiety. There is no specific cure for the disease; however, there are treatments available to delay the disease’s progression and to help keep your dog comfortable. In the past, some vets and pet owners have found the physiotherapy can lengthen a dog’s mobility. Meticulous or intense and precise muscle supportive care has also been recommended. In addition, “range of motion” exercises are also thought to be extremely helpful. To determine what will work best for your corgi, make an appointment with your vet and discuss treatment options. For additional information about DM in general, you should also talk with your veterinary clinic Ellicott City, MD. Schedule an appointment here.
