7:05 AM Training Your Dog to Walk Nicely on a Leash |
Your dog’s walks are great for both you and your dog.Walks provide exercise, and time for socialization and bonding. However, walks can be really unpleasant if your dog drags you around the neighborhood by his leash. Thus you need to train your dog to walk with a slack leash. Train your dog when he is attentive but not overly excited. Take him outside with his leash in place. Have him sit a minute or so to ensure he is calm. Start your walk. Continue walking as long as the leash is slack. If the leash becomes taut, quickly turn around and hustle of in the opposite direction. Call your dog so he needs to hurry to keep up with you. Continue this procedure as your dog soon learns that a slack leash is required. Be consistent with this method so your dog doesn’t slip and start dragging you around again.
