Scratching is a natural feline instinct. You may not be able to stop your furball from engaging in the behavior but there steps you can take to ensure that your prized carpets, furniture, etc. remain safe from your pet’s claws.

Set up scratching posts and/or scratching pads and entice your cat to use them by using positive reinforcement. Make sure to use small, soft, meat-based treats which are highly palatable even for the pickiest cats.

Incorporate activities that can keep your cat engrossed so he won’t be able to think about scratching “illegal” scratching surfaces to prevent from getting bored.

Keep your cat remain calm and relaxed by applying synthetic pheromones on spots that your pet frequents.  You can also gently wipe the cat’s cheek with a towel to get pheromones from scent glands located on a cat’s face. Pheromones or scent chemicals can help cats calm themselves while promoting relaxation.
