Tips To Ensure Comfort Of Dairy Cows During Summer

The optimum temperature for dairy cows is 25°F – 50°F. When temperatures start to soar during summer, there will be negative, lasting effects on the health and performance of the herd, and consequently the profitability of the enterprise. Here are some tips to minimize the negative effects of heat stress during the summer season:

  • Gradually shift the cows’ feeding schedule by offering fresh feed during the coolest parts of the day, that is, early in the morning and/or late at night.
  • There may be a need to reformulate the ration to increase nutrient density. This will help ensure that the cows will receive essential nutrients for production and maintenance even when consuming fewer pounds of feed.
  • Fresh, clean, and cool water should be available at all times because the water needs of cows increase significantly during heat heat stress.

Talk to your vet Westminster MD if you have any concerns about your pet’s health and/or behavior.
