Tips for Handling a Dog in Heat

Inexperienced dog owners whose female dog is coming into heat may often find it a challenge to deal with this natural female phenomenon. Understanding this physiological process will help you manage the situation confidently.

  • Never leave your dog alone in the yard

To avoid unwanted pregnancy, protect your female dog that is in heat from male dogs. When your dog needs to go out to the yard, take her there, and if possible, consider using a leash.

  • All walks should be with a leash

Even if your dog is not in heat, walking off-leash is strictly a “no-no”. A female dog that is in heat will be difficult to call back if she sees a male dog.

  • Pay close attention

Since the heat cycle is controlled by hormones, the changes that take place in your dog are not only physical but physiological, as well. When you spend extra time with your dog when she is in heat, your pet will be much calmer.
