11:16 PM These Could Be Harmful To Your Pet |
Even if you take necessary precautions to ensure that your pets are safe from certain household products that may contain potentially harmful ingredients, there are unseen health risks that can be commonly overlooked. Fortunately, these health hazards can easily be avoided if you are aware about them. One potentially harmful item in your home that may put your pet at risk is de-icing salt which is applied on surfaces to melt snow and ice, especially during winter. When dogs are taken on outdoor excursions, they can walk on surfaces where de-icing salts have been applied and they can become sick when they lick their paws. Ingestion can cause hypersalivation, nausea, and vomiting. When large quantities are ingested, it can trigger a dramatic increase in the level of blood electrolytes and cause irritation of the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. There may also be nervous signs. De-icing salts can also cause skin irritations, burns, and cracks on a dog's paw pads. To prevent cases associated with exposure to de-icers, it is recommended that pet owners should use de-icing products that contain calcium chloride or potassium chloride. Although these products are more expensive, they are much safer than pets. Call your Vets Mt. Airy MD if you think your pet has been exposed to items that are potentially toxic. |
