9:10 AM Teaching Your Dog to Walk at Heel |
Walking your dog is fun but not if he is dragging you around the neighborhood by the leash. Thus teaching him to walk at your heel will make walks more comfortable for both of you. Start walking and continue as long as the leash is slack. If the leash becomes taut, turn around quickly and walk in the opposite direction. Call your dog’s name followed by the HEEL command so your dog needs to hurry to catch up. Give your dog a treat and praise when he walks alongside you. Practice this and soon your dog will reliably obeythe HEEL command and walk with a slack leash. Next, practice in a fenced-in area.Drop the leash as your dog comes to your side to reinforce the HEEL command. Eventually your dog will walk at heel without a leash. Use this command during fetch games or in an off-leash area. For more information, contact your vet clinic Bolingbrook IL. |
