Fatty liver disease is a very common disease in cats like the Somali cat. It is also known as Hepatic Lipidosis and occurs when large amounts of fat are deposited into the liver. This occurs when the cat’s body believe it’s in survival mode and is need of extra protein to break down into energy. The large amounts of fat in the liver, however, are too much and cause the liver to malfunction. Signs of the disease in cats like the Somali cat include lack of appetite, weight loss, expanding abdomen, yellowing of the eyes, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, muscle wasting, depression, downward flexion of the head and neck, drooling, and possible collapse in later stages.
